Update: Unique Ingredient Identifiers (UNIIs) added to MeSH Supplementary Concept Records

The UNII Project is a collaborative effort between NLM and Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) informatics scientists to include FDA Substance Registration System (SRS) - Unique Ingredient Identifiers (UNIIs) in MeSH. The first part of this project, completed for the 2013 MeSH year, involved updating MeSH Supplemental Concepts (SCRs) with UNII identifiers. The 2014 MeSH release completes the second part and includes 2,900 UNII updates for Descriptor chemicals. In total, there are now 10,837 UNII identifiers in MeSH.

Because many of the MeSH UNII concepts involve pharmaceutical compounds, the range of pharmacological action (PA) classes covered by MeSH was expanded and a new category, "Diagnostic Uses of Chemicals," was added. This effort was coordinated with the UNII project so that MeSH headings could be simultaneously reviewed for UNII and PA assignments. It is hoped that the addition of UNII identifiers and new MeSH PA assignments will improve the utility of the MeSH database as a resource for drug information.

Genetics Home Reference

In the Fall of 2013, MeSH finalized the integration of Genetic Home Reference (GHR) disease vocabulary completing a goal of covering more than 95% of all the human diseases and conditions with genetic components in MeSH. Human disease terms from the NIH Office of Rare Diseases and Research (ORDR), Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), and GHR are now part of MeSH.

Example of New DeCS-exclusive hierarchical codes

With the elimination of some descriptors, which are generally absorbed by others, which in turn often keep their hierarchical codes. This often happens when MeSH creates a descriptor whose concept already existed in a category that is exclusively DeCS or when the BIREME team identifies the existence of a conceptual duplication. For example, the descriptor "Energy-Generating Resources" which until 2013 belonged only to the subcategory N06, is now also in subcategory SP4. This occurred because this descriptor absorbed the descriptor "Power Sources (Environmental Health)", which was in this subcategory. Here is your new structure.

HEALTH CARE [N]

   Environment and Public Health [N06]

      Environment [N06.230]

         Energy-Generating Resources [N06.230.132] +

PUBLIC HEALTH [SP]

   Environmental Health [SP4]

      Science [SP4.011]

         Energy [SP4.011.082]

            Energy-Generating Resources [SP4.011.082.683] +

See Helpful links above to see other changes in hierarchical codes made this year. The ones below are those relating to the solution of conceptual MeSH-DeCS duplications or changes in hierarchical codes from exclusively DeCS categories:

Chernobyl Nuclear Accident (absorbed Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor); Hospital Accreditation (absorbed Credentialing of Hospital Units); Biological Agents (was subdivided into Biological Factors and Biological Products); Caribbean Public Health Agency (absorbed Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and its hierarchical code was modified); Power Plants (absorbed Energy Plants and its hierarchical code was modified); Staff Development (absorbed Human Resources Formation); Electric Power Supplies (absorbed Electrical Sources); Energy-Generating Resources (absorbed Power Sources (Environmental Health)); Family Health Program (was changed to Family Health Strategy and is now also in subcategory SP1).
